Do I have to take the full amount of statutory leave to which I am entitled or can I return to work sooner?

No – you can take as much or as little as you like but the first 2 weeks after the birth of the child must be taken by the mother as this is compulsory maternity leave. Thereafter, you are free to return to work early but you have to give your employer the required notice. Employers will assume that you will take the full 1 year unless you notify differently.
